The Practice

Seth Godin

The act of doing, with consistency and intentionality

The Practice: Shipping Creative Work* challenges the idea of creative block. Godin’s idea is that consistency is key and is far more important than waiting for the muse to show up.

Turn up and do the work every day without exception. Build the habit and commit to the process. Applying consistency to the act of doing is the best way to tap into creativity.

The Creatives Workshop

It’s worth exploring a bit of background. The Creatives Workshop was developed by Godin and delivered by Akimbo, at the time they ran a series of workshops from storytelling to marketing and creativity. In 2022 I joined what was to be the last of The Creatives Workshops before the Akimbo organisation pulled them all to focus on their AltMBA programme. The impact and benefits of the workshop have been long lasting and I continue to stay in touch with fellow workshop members years later.

At its heart, the workshop provided a space to build and embed a daily habit of creativity. In a workshop environment where you showed up daily to share the work you had done. A mix of the commitment made to yourself to build the consistency, alongside the accountability of sharing progress with others, combined to create a powerful environment.

The results were impressive. The aim was to maintain a 100 day streak of showing up every day to do your creative work. Many achieved this and collectively we cheered them on as the finish line came into sight.

There are many reasons why this is harder to do than you might think. The Practice* is based on the workshop and looks at these reasons while teaching how to dance with your fears. Godin outlines the difference between a professional and an amateur. A professional shows up rain or shine and does the work, and importantly ‘ships’ it. Sharing your creativity is part of the process.
